Yerevan lies in the northeastern part of the Ararat Valley on both banks of the Hrazdan River. The city rises from roughly 850 to 1,300 metres above sea level, with lower southern districts and higher neighbourhoods in the north and northeast.
Yerevan combines a dense administrative and business centre, large residential districts, private housing and industrial areas. Republic Square, the Cascade, the Opera House, Erebuni Fortress and the Hrazdan Gorge are major landmarks; traffic, construction, heating and local dust sources can affect air quality differently across the city.
In Yerevan, the persistent period of elevated air pollution usually lasts from November through March. During cold and calm weather, pollutants remain near the ground for longer, while the air is more often cleaner from late spring to early autumn, although isolated dust events can occur throughout the year.
Yerevan has a continental climate with hot, dry summers and relatively cold winters. Precipitation is limited and falls mainly in spring and early summer; in winter, cold air, weak winds and a lack of precipitation can create conditions in which pollution accumulates.
