Kentron occupies central Yerevan around Republic Square and the city's main avenues. The district includes parts of the central plateau, slopes towards the Hrazdan Gorge and neighbourhoods near the Getar riverbed.
Republic Square, the Opera House, the Cascade, Circular Park and many of the capital's administrative and cultural institutions are located in Kentron. It is a dense mixed residential, business and commercial district with heavy traffic and numerous construction sites.
The most persistent air pollution in Kentron occurs from November through March, while the cleanest periods are more common in late spring and summer. Throughout the year, local readings can vary near busy streets, construction sites and densely built blocks.
Kentron shares Yerevan's dry continental climate, but dense buildings and heated surfaces intensify summer heat. Central blocks ventilate less effectively during calm winter weather, while conditions near the Hrazdan Gorge can be noticeably different.
