Shengavit lies in southern Yerevan, in one of the city's lowest areas along the Hrazdan River and near Yerevan Lake. Major roads and railway lines cross the district, connecting the centre with the southern outskirts.
Shengavit combines dense residential neighbourhoods, private housing, industrial sites and warehouses. The Shengavit archaeological settlement, Yerevan Lake and Garegin Nzhdeh Square are important landmarks, while transport and production areas create a varied urban environment.
Elevated pollution in Shengavit is more persistent from November through March, when cold air remains in the lower part of the city. Local episodes can also occur during the dry season near industrial areas, construction sites and major transport corridors.
Shengavit is one of Yerevan's warmest and driest districts. Summers are hot and winters are generally milder than on the northeastern heights, but the low elevation can reduce ventilation during winter inversions.
