Last winter in Yerevan the air was worse than the WHO daily guideline on 138 of 151 days. That is almost the entire heating season — details are in the winter report.
Purifiers and respirators will not solve the city’s problems, but they will help you get through a hard season with as little harm to your health as possible. In this article we will look at how to choose a purifier and a respirator, and what you can actually buy in Armenia. Prices are as of August 2026; open the links again before you buy.
Choosing an air purifier
Fine particles are filtered by a mechanical HEPA H13, or a filter rated 99.97% at 0.3 µm. The carbon layer removes odours; by itself it barely holds particles.
A humidifier does not filter air: it only adds water vapour. Ultrasonic models filled with tap water also spray mineral mist — a sensor in the room may show a rise in PM2.5 that is not outdoor PM2.5. If the apartment is dry in winter, a humidifier can sit next to a purifier, but it cannot replace one.
When choosing a unit, use CADR, not the marketing copy on the box such as “up to 60 m²”. CADR (particle, GB/T 18801) is how many cubic metres of clean air the unit delivers per hour. The room size on the carton is usually overstated. A 20–30 m² room with a ceiling around 2.5 m needs about 200–300 m³/h. If CADR is higher, you can run the purifier at a quieter speed. For filtration to be effective, keep the windows closed.
Before you buy, check that a replacement filter for that model can be bought in Armenia or ordered from a marketplace. Otherwise in 4–6 months the filter will clog, filtration efficiency will drop sharply, and there will be nothing to replace it with.
Three models you can buy in Yerevan
Three Xiaomi models are in shops in the city right now. They are reasonably reliable and popular, and replacement filters for them are the easiest to find. Dyson costs more and is nowhere near as reliable: my own Dyson humidifier-purifier broke too often for me to recommend one.
You can buy them at Xiaomi Armenia (Mi Store, 11 Northern Avenue) — devices and filters in one place. Also SmartBox at 18 Sayat-Nova and Zigzag.
The Xiaomi 4 Compact costs about 38 thousand AMD at SmartBox and about 45–52 thousand at Xiaomi Armenia and Zigzag. CADR is 230 m³/h — enough for a 16–20 m² bedroom or office, not a living room. Xiaomi Armenia’s catalogue has no replacement filter for the Compact, so if you buy this model, decide in advance where the next cartridge will come from.
For most apartments the better fit is the Xiaomi 4 Lite: CADR 360 m³/h, a typical 25–35 m² room, about 65 thousand at SmartBox and 70–82 thousand at Xiaomi Armenia and Zigzag. The filter is at Xiaomi Armenia for 16,900 AMD, so you will not have to hunt for a cartridge separately.
If the room is larger, look at the Xiaomi 4 Pro. CADR 500 m³/h, living room, about 116–137 thousand at Xiaomi Armenia and Zigzag and about 130 thousand at SmartBox. The filter is 19,900 AMD.
Change the filter every 6–12 months, more often in winter. Xiaomi Armenia stocks consumables for the 4 Lite, 4 Pro, and larger models such as the 6 and Max.
If the model or spare filters are not in town, there is still Ozon with delivery to Armenia and Pinduoduo through freight forwarders such as Globbing and Onex. Filters are often cheaper that way. Used purifiers also appear on list.am — check which filter fits the model before you buy.
Choosing a respirator
For protection from PM2.5 outdoors, use an FFP2 respirator or an equivalent N95 or KN95. Cloth and ordinary surgical masks are not suitable: they do not seal against the face and are not designed to filter fine particles from inhaled air.
Even a good respirator will not help if air leaks around the edges. It must seal around the nose, cheeks, and chin. After putting it on, press the nose clip into place and check for leaks. A beard or stubble prevents a proper seal. Replace a respirator if it becomes wet, damaged, or noticeably harder to breathe through.
3M Aura 9300+ respirators are listed by Würth Armenia; its retail store is at 3/10 Kievyan Street. Made to Make, at 1/2 Viktor Hambardzumyan Street, also sells 3M protective equipment. Check the required class and size before visiting.
In pharmacies and medical-supply stores, look for FFP2 under EN 149, N95 under NIOSH, or KN95 under GB 2626. A “five-layer mask” label without a standard says nothing about protection from PM2.5.
