Geghard is located in Kotayk Province in the upper Azat River valley among the slopes of the Gegham Mountains. The area is much higher than Yerevan and exposed to mountain winds; Geghard Monastery and the road to Garni are its main landmarks.
This is primarily a rural and natural area without dense urban development or large industrial zones. The main local pressures are household heating, vehicle traffic along the tourist route and dust from exposed sections of road.
In Geghard, episodes of elevated pollution are more likely during the cold months when homes are heated. At the same time, the open mountain terrain and strong winds can change local air conditions quickly.
Geghard has a highland continental climate with cold, snowy winters and short, moderately warm summers. Weather changes faster than in Yerevan, and temperatures are generally lower because of the altitude and exposed mountain terrain.
