Air Quality Map of Abovyan

Abovyan is located in Kotayk Province northeast of Yerevan, on an elevated plateau at the foot of the Gegham Mountains. The city stands higher than the capital and is connected to it by major roads leading towards central and northeastern Armenia.

Abovyan developed as an industrial satellite city of Yerevan and combines compact apartment districts, private houses and production areas. The central square and main avenues are its principal landmarks, while traffic and nearby industrial sites can contribute to local differences in air quality.

In Abovyan, the longest periods of elevated pollution occur during the cold season, especially from November through March. Dispersion conditions are usually better in summer, although dry weather, road dust and individual local sources can cause short-term deterioration.

Abovyan has a continental climate and is cooler than lower-lying Yerevan. Winters are cold and sometimes snowy, summers are warm and relatively dry, and the city's exposed position makes wind important for both cooling and pollutant dispersion.
